Recent headlining article in the ABC has alerted Brisbane residents to what could be happening in their suburb next.

As indicated in the Council meeting minutes from Dec 6 2022 (click here for meeting minutes), the Nathan, Salisbury, Moorooka Neighbourhood Plan has been passed and is being sent to the State Government for approval.

Residents have been kept in the dark and final details are still NOT available to the public on the BCC website but in documents SOS have obtained from Council, hundreds of homes are being negatively affected by the proposed rezoning. The local residents have fought for over two years to have their voices heard and we are still waiting to be recognised.

A board of Brisbane City Council members and developers (https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/planning-and-building/planning-guidelines-and-tools/neighbourhood-planning-and-urban-renewal/neighbourhood-plans-and-other-local-planning-projects/better-suburbs-initiative/better-suburbs-initiative-board) have obtained their “pot-of-gold”; high-density development in some of the oldest and most historical, character-filled suburbs of Moorooka and Salisbury, Brisbane.

There has been NO consideration for the current residents. Where are the added green spaces, the bikeways & walkways and other important infrastructure such as libraries, aged-care facilities or, if we dare ask, a community pool for the extra projected population??

After nearly two years of being ignored by our local council we have been forced to approach our local State Members to be heard and we will not stop.

Big thanks to all our local council member, Cnr Steve Griffiths and the vast amounts of local residents who have showed their support especially at the recent resident's meeting in October which reached record numbers. This enormous show of support has given us the strength to keep fighting.

We will continue to seek help from the State Government in our engagement with the Brisbane City Council. We aim to reach a suitable outcome that maintains the character of our suburbs, provides sensible and sustainable development with supporting community infrastructure.

The battle is not over until we win.

Have a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year from the SOS team.
